Methyldopa

A blood pressure-lowering medicine, long used including in pregnancy.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high blood pressure

Common side effects

  • sedation, usually short-lived
  • headache
  • weakness

Cautions

  • can cause liver disorders — stop if fever or jaundice
  • can cause haemolytic anaemia (positive Coombs test)
  • periodic blood counts and liver tests needed
  • not with active liver disease

Interactions

  • MAOI antidepressants — do not combine
  • other blood pressure medicines — effect adds up
  • lithium — monitor for toxicity
  • iron salts (ferrous sulfate or gluconate) — avoid, reduce absorption
  • anaesthetics — doses may need reducing

Pregnancy: may be used — risk to the baby appears remote
