Mesna

A protective medicine (Mesnex) given with ifosfamide chemotherapy to prevent bladder bleeding.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • preventing ifosfamide-induced haemorrhagic cystitis (bladder bleeding)

Common side effects

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • constipation
  • tiredness
  • headache

Cautions

  • allergic reactions including anaphylaxis reported
  • severe skin reactions can occur
  • injection contains benzyl alcohol — avoid in premature babies

Pregnancy: given with ifosfamide, which can harm the unborn baby
