Clinical information

Common uses

complicated skin infections
complicated abdominal infections
bacterial meningitis in children

Common side effects

headache
nausea or vomiting
constipation
diarrhoea
rash

Cautions

not after anaphylaxis to penicillins or other beta-lactams
severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson) reported
seizures reported during treatment
C. difficile diarrhoea can occur

Interactions

valproic acid or divalproex — levels fall, seizure risk
probenecid — not recommended together

Pregnancy: insufficient human data — no harm seen in animals
