Meloxicam

An NSAID used for arthritis pain and inflammation.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • osteoarthritis
  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (60 kg and over)

Common side effects

  • diarrhoea
  • upper respiratory tract infections
  • indigestion
  • flu-like symptoms

Cautions

  • boxed warning: heart attack and stroke risk
  • boxed warning: stomach bleeding and ulcers, can be fatal
  • not after heart bypass (CABG) surgery
  • avoid from about 30 weeks of pregnancy

Interactions

  • warfarin and anticoagulants — bleeding risk
  • aspirin — not generally recommended together
  • SSRI or SNRI antidepressants — bleeding risk
  • ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta blockers — weakened, kidney risk
  • lithium — toxicity risk
  • methotrexate — toxicity risk

Pregnancy: limit from 20 weeks; avoid from 30 weeks
