A hormonal appetite stimulant (megestrol acetate suspension) for AIDS-related weight loss.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • anorexia, cachexia or unexplained major weight loss in AIDS

Common side effects

  • diarrhoea
  • wind (flatulence)
  • rash
  • nausea
  • headache

Cautions

  • can suppress the adrenal glands — Cushing's or adrenal insufficiency
  • new or worsened diabetes reported
  • not for preventing weight loss
  • blood clots reported after marketing

Pregnancy: do not use — may harm the unborn baby
