Mefloquine

An antimalarial tablet used to prevent and treat malaria.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • treatment of malaria
  • malaria prevention (prophylaxis)

Common side effects

  • dizziness or vertigo
  • ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • loss of balance
  • anxiety or low mood

Cautions

  • not for prevention with depression, psychosis, anxiety disorder or seizures
  • psychiatric symptoms can persist long after stopping
  • dizziness and balance problems can be permanent in some
  • take care driving, operating machinery or diving

Interactions

  • halofantrine — dangerous heart rhythm, avoid within 15 weeks
  • ketoconazole — same heart rhythm danger, avoid within 15 weeks
  • quinine or quinidine — heart rhythm abnormalities
  • quinine or chloroquine — raised seizure risk
  • beta blockers — caution, cardiac arrest reported
