Common side effects
- dizziness or vertigo
- ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- loss of balance
- anxiety or low mood
Cautions
- not for prevention with depression, psychosis, anxiety disorder or seizures
- psychiatric symptoms can persist long after stopping
- dizziness and balance problems can be permanent in some
- take care driving, operating machinery or diving
Interactions
- halofantrine — dangerous heart rhythm, avoid within 15 weeks
- ketoconazole — same heart rhythm danger, avoid within 15 weeks
- quinine or quinidine — heart rhythm abnormalities
- quinine or chloroquine — raised seizure risk
- beta blockers — caution, cardiac arrest reported
