Mefenamic Acid

An NSAID painkiller for short-term pain and period pain.

Clinical information

Common uses

mild to moderate pain, up to one week
period pain (primary dysmenorrhea)

Common side effects

stomach pain
indigestion or heartburn
diarrhoea
nausea
headache or dizziness

Cautions

raises heart attack and stroke risk
stomach bleeding and ulcers, which can be fatal
not after heart bypass (CABG) surgery
not with aspirin-sensitive asthma

Interactions

warfarin and blood thinners — bleeding risk
aspirin and other NSAIDs — avoid combining
SSRI or SNRI antidepressants — bleeding risk
blood pressure medicines (ACE inhibitors, ARBs) — weakened, kidney risk
lithium — toxicity risk
methotrexate — toxicity risk

Pregnancy: limit from 20 weeks; avoid from 30 weeks
