Medroxyprogesterone acetate

A progestogen hormone tablet (Provera) for period problems and other hormonal conditions.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • heavy periods
  • endometriosis
  • polycystic ovary syndrome
  • menopause symptoms and prostate-cancer treatment hot flushes

Common side effects

  • headaches
  • feeling sick
  • irregular bleeding or spotting
  • breast tenderness
  • weight gain

Cautions

  • not a contraceptive — use condoms as well
  • avoid with hormone-sensitive cancers or previous blood clots
  • blood clot signs (leg pain, breathlessness) need urgent help
  • do not take while pregnant

Interactions

  • rifampicin (antibiotic)
  • HIV or hepatitis C medicines
  • epilepsy medicines (carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital)
  • warfarin (blood thinner)
  • St John's wort — do not take together
