Lovastatin

A statin that lowers cholesterol alongside a low-fat diet.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • lowering total and LDL cholesterol
  • reducing risk in atherosclerotic vascular disease

Cautions

  • not with active liver disease or unexplained liver-test rises
  • muscle damage (myopathy, rhabdomyolysis) risk with interacting drugs
  • do not use in pregnancy or while breastfeeding

Interactions

  • strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (itraconazole, clarithromycin, HIV protease inhibitors) — contraindicated
  • cyclosporine — muscle damage risk
  • diltiazem, verapamil, dronedarone or danazol
  • amiodarone
  • colchicine
  • warfarin — monitor clotting time

Pregnancy: do not use — contraindicated in pregnancy
