Lorazepam

A benzodiazepine (Ativan) used short-term for anxiety and anxiety-related sleep problems.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • anxiety
  • sleeping problems related to anxiety
  • relaxation before operations (pre-med)
  • stopping seizures (hospital injection)

Common side effects

  • daytime sleepiness or tiredness
  • muscle weakness
  • problems with coordination or movements

Cautions

  • can be addictive — not recommended beyond 4 weeks
  • do not stop suddenly — withdrawal effects
  • do not drink alcohol — deep sleep and breathing risk
  • do not drive if drowsy or dizzy

Interactions

  • strong painkillers (codeine, morphine, methadone)
  • antidepressants and antipsychotics
  • sedating antihistamines (chlorphenamine, promethazine)
  • HIV medicines (ritonavir, efavirenz)
  • antifungals (fluconazole)
  • grapefruit juice — raises lorazepam levels

Pregnancy: can be taken — long-term use near birth may affect the baby
