Lorazepam

A benzodiazepine (Ativan) used short-term for anxiety and anxiety-related sleep problems.

Clinical information

Common uses

anxiety
sleeping problems related to anxiety
relaxation before operations (pre-med)
stopping seizures (hospital injection)

Common side effects

daytime sleepiness or tiredness
muscle weakness
problems with coordination or movements

Cautions

can be addictive — not recommended beyond 4 weeks
do not stop suddenly — withdrawal effects
do not drink alcohol — deep sleep and breathing risk
do not drive if drowsy or dizzy

Interactions

strong painkillers (codeine, morphine, methadone)
antidepressants and antipsychotics
sedating antihistamines (chlorphenamine, promethazine)
HIV medicines (ritonavir, efavirenz)
antifungals (fluconazole)
grapefruit juice — raises lorazepam levels

Pregnancy: can be taken — long-term use near birth may affect the baby
