Loratadine

A non-drowsy antihistamine (Clarityn) that relieves allergy symptoms.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • hay fever
  • red, itchy eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • eczema and hives
  • insect bite and sting reactions

Common side effects

  • feeling sleepy or tired
  • headaches (children)
  • feeling tired or nervous (children)

Cautions

  • can still cause sleepiness — do not drive if affected
  • best to avoid alcohol
  • may need stopping a few days before allergy tests
  • check first if severe liver failure or epilepsy

Interactions

  • amiodarone (irregular heartbeat)
  • cimetidine (indigestion)
  • erythromycin (antibiotic)
  • other medicines that cause sleepiness or dry mouth

Pregnancy: can be taken in pregnancy
