Lopinavir/Ritonav

A combination HIV medicine (lopinavir with ritonavir, brand Kaletra) taken with other antiretrovirals.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • HIV-1 infection in adults
  • HIV-1 infection in children from 14 days old

Common side effects

  • diarrhoea
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • raised triglycerides
  • raised cholesterol

Cautions

  • many serious drug interactions — check every new medicine
  • pancreatitis and liver damage, sometimes fatal, have occurred
  • can affect heart rhythm (QT and PR prolongation)
  • can trigger or worsen diabetes

Interactions

  • rifampin — do not combine
  • St John's wort — do not combine
  • simvastatin and lovastatin — do not combine
  • ergot medicines (ergotamine, dihydroergotamine) — do not combine
  • oral midazolam and triazolam — do not combine
  • hormonal contraceptives may work less well

Pregnancy: can be used with adjusted dosing — avoid the oral liquid
