Lisinopril

Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor that relaxes blood vessels to lower blood pressure.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high blood pressure
  • after a recent heart attack
  • kidney problems caused by diabetes
  • heart failure (with other medicines)

Common side effects

  • headaches
  • feeling or being sick
  • diarrhoea
  • dizziness, especially on standing up
  • a dry cough that does not go away

Cautions

  • can affect the kidneys — regular blood tests
  • can cause angioedema (face, lip or throat swelling)
  • may not suit kidney or liver problems
  • do not drive if dizzy or drowsy

Interactions

  • other blood pressure and heart medicines
  • diuretics (water tablets)
  • ibuprofen and similar painkillers
  • lithium
  • heparin (anticoagulant)
  • alcohol (increases risk of low blood pressure)

Pregnancy: not usually used — can harm the baby's development
