Liraglutide

Liraglutide is a daily GLP-1 injection used to treat type 2 diabetes or help with weight loss.

Clinical information

Common uses

type 2 diabetes
weight loss in obesity (with diet and exercise)

Common side effects

feeling or being sick
constipation or diarrhoea
headache
feeling tired
itchy or red skin where injected

Cautions

can cause pancreatitis — get help for severe stomach pain
can cause gallstones or gallbladder swelling
may not suit people over 75, gut problems or past pancreatitis
do not stop suddenly if you have diabetes

Interactions

gliclazide, glimepiride, metformin and other diabetes medicines
insulin (dose may need adjusting)
other GLP-1 agonists (semaglutide, dulaglutide, exenatide)
general anaesthetics or sedatives (tell the professional first)
alcohol (worsens sickness; best avoided)
