Linezolid

Linezolid is an antibiotic tablet for serious Gram-positive infections, including resistant ones.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • pneumonia (hospital or community acquired)
  • complicated skin infections, including diabetic foot
  • vancomycin-resistant enterococcal infections

Common side effects

  • diarrhoea
  • being sick
  • headache
  • feeling sick
  • anaemia

Cautions

  • can lower blood counts — weekly blood tests
  • nerve and eye damage risk if used over 28 days
  • serotonin syndrome possible with some antidepressants
  • must not be taken with MAO inhibitors

Interactions

  • MAO inhibitor medicines (must not combine, or within 2 weeks)
  • serotonergic antidepressants (serotonin syndrome risk)
  • adrenergic medicines (can raise blood pressure)
  • insulin and diabetes tablets (low blood sugar reported)

Pregnancy: case reports have not identified a risk
