Linezolid

Linezolid is an antibiotic tablet for serious Gram-positive infections, including resistant ones.

Clinical information

Common uses

pneumonia (hospital or community acquired)
complicated skin infections, including diabetic foot
vancomycin-resistant enterococcal infections

Common side effects

diarrhoea
being sick
headache
feeling sick
anaemia

Cautions

can lower blood counts — weekly blood tests
nerve and eye damage risk if used over 28 days
serotonin syndrome possible with some antidepressants
must not be taken with MAO inhibitors

Interactions

MAO inhibitor medicines (must not combine, or within 2 weeks)
serotonergic antidepressants (serotonin syndrome risk)
adrenergic medicines (can raise blood pressure)
insulin and diabetes tablets (low blood sugar reported)

Pregnancy: case reports have not identified a risk
