Linagliptin is a once-daily tablet for type 2 diabetes that helps the body make more insulin.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • type 2 diabetes

Common side effects

  • cold-like symptoms such as a blocked nose
  • cough
  • constipation

Cautions

  • can cause pancreatitis — get help for severe stomach pain
  • low blood sugar possible when combined with other diabetes medicines
  • may not suit people who have had pancreatitis

Interactions

  • carbamazepine (epilepsy medicine)
  • rifampicin (antibiotic)
  • insulin, metformin or gliclazide (doses may need changing)
  • alcohol (affects blood sugar; best avoided)

Pregnancy: not used in pregnancy
