Clinical information
Common uses
- treating or preventing bronchospasm in reversible airway disease
- adults and children 6 years and older
Common side effects
- palpitations and fast heartbeat
- chest pain
- headache and dizziness
- tremor
- nervousness
Cautions
- rarely triggers paradoxical airway narrowing — stop immediately
- needing more doses than usual signals worsening asthma
- not a substitute for steroid inhalers
- excessive use can be fatal; can lower potassium
Interactions
- beta-blockers (block effect; can cause severe bronchospasm)
- other adrenergic bronchodilators (additive effect)
- diuretics (potassium may fall further)
- digoxin (levels may fall)
- MAOIs and tricyclic antidepressants (heart effects potentiated)
Pregnancy: no adequate human studies — asthma control matters
