Levonogestrel + Ethinyl Estradiol

Levonorgestrel with ethinylestradiol is a combined oral contraceptive pill that prevents pregnancy.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • preventing pregnancy

Common side effects

  • feeling or being sick
  • breakthrough bleeding or spotting
  • breast tenderness
  • mood changes
  • weight or appetite changes

Cautions

  • do not smoke — serious heart and clot risks, especially over 35
  • raised risk of blood clots, heart attack and stroke
  • not with a history of clots, some cancers, uncontrolled high blood pressure or
  • stop 4 weeks before major surgery

Interactions

  • rifampicin and rifabutin (reduce effectiveness)
  • phenytoin, barbiturates and topiramate (reduce effectiveness)
  • St John's wort (may reduce effectiveness)
  • griseofulvin (reduces effectiveness)
  • some penicillin and tetracycline antibiotics (use back-up contraception)
  • atorvastatin and some antifungals (raise hormone levels)

Pregnancy: must not be used in pregnancy
