Levonogestrel + Ethinyl Estradiol

Levonorgestrel with ethinylestradiol is a combined oral contraceptive pill that prevents pregnancy.

Common uses

preventing pregnancy

Common side effects

feeling or being sick
breakthrough bleeding or spotting
breast tenderness
mood changes
weight or appetite changes

Cautions

do not smoke — serious heart and clot risks, especially over 35
raised risk of blood clots, heart attack and stroke
not with a history of clots, some cancers, uncontrolled high blood pressure or
stop 4 weeks before major surgery

Interactions

rifampicin and rifabutin (reduce effectiveness)
phenytoin, barbiturates and topiramate (reduce effectiveness)
St John's wort (may reduce effectiveness)
griseofulvin (reduces effectiveness)
some penicillin and tetracycline antibiotics (use back-up contraception)
atorvastatin and some antifungals (raise hormone levels)

Pregnancy: must not be used in pregnancy
