Levofloxacin

Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic tablet for a range of bacterial infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

pneumonia
skin infections
urinary tract and kidney infections
sinusitis and flare-ups of chronic bronchitis

Common side effects

feeling sick
headache
diarrhoea
sleeplessness
dizziness

Cautions

can cause tendon damage and rupture — stop if tendon pain
can cause nerve damage and mental effects, sometimes lasting
avoid with myasthenia gravis — worsens muscle weakness
reserved for minor infections only when no alternative works

Interactions

antacids, iron, zinc or multivitamins (take 2 hours apart)
warfarin (blood thinner; bleeding risk — monitor)
diabetes medicines (blood sugar swings — monitor)
other heart-rhythm (QT-prolonging) medicines (avoid)
corticosteroids (higher tendon-rupture risk in older people)

Pregnancy: published studies have not identified a risk
