Levodopa + Carbidopa

Carbidopa with levodopa is a combination tablet used to treat Parkinson's disease and parkinsonism.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • Parkinson's disease
  • post-encephalitic parkinsonism
  • parkinsonism after carbon monoxide or manganese poisoning

Common side effects

  • involuntary movements (dyskinesias)
  • feeling sick
  • dizziness
  • sleepiness

Cautions

  • sudden sleep episodes — take care when driving
  • do not stop suddenly — risk of a dangerous fever-rigidity reaction
  • watch for depression, hallucinations or impulse-control problems
  • can lower vitamin B6 levels; seizures reported

Interactions

  • nonselective MAO inhibitor antidepressants (must stop 2 weeks before)
  • selegiline (MAO-B inhibitor) only at recommended dose
