Levodopa + Carbidopa

Carbidopa with levodopa is a combination tablet used to treat Parkinson's disease and parkinsonism.

Clinical information

Common uses

Parkinson's disease
post-encephalitic parkinsonism
parkinsonism after carbon monoxide or manganese poisoning

Common side effects

involuntary movements (dyskinesias)
feeling sick
dizziness
sleepiness

Cautions

sudden sleep episodes — take care when driving
do not stop suddenly — risk of a dangerous fever-rigidity reaction
watch for depression, hallucinations or impulse-control problems
can lower vitamin B6 levels; seizures reported

Interactions

nonselective MAO inhibitor antidepressants (must stop 2 weeks before)
selegiline (MAO-B inhibitor) only at recommended dose
