Levetiracetam

Levetiracetam (Keppra) is a medicine used to prevent seizures caused by epilepsy.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • preventing epileptic seizures

Common side effects

  • dizziness
  • feeling sleepy or tired
  • headaches
  • feeling or being sick
  • feeling agitated or irritable

Cautions

  • do not stop suddenly; dose is reduced gradually
  • may not suit people with kidney problems
  • tell your doctor about depression or self-harm thoughts
  • do not drive if sleepy or dizzy

Interactions

  • macrogol (laxative)
  • methotrexate
  • St John's wort (avoid)
  • alcohol (increases sleepiness)

Pregnancy: can be used if needed — lowest effective dose
