Leucovorin

Leucovorin (folinic acid) is a rescue medicine that reduces the toxicity of methotrexate and similar drugs.

Clinical information

Common uses

reducing methotrexate toxicity
folic acid antagonist overdose
cerebral folate transport deficiency (FOLR1)

Common side effects

itching
rash
breathlessness
chills or shivering

Cautions

allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur
not for anaemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency

Interactions

some epilepsy medicines (extra seizure monitoring needed)
trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (avoid together)
fluorouracil (leucovorin increases its toxicity)

Pregnancy: no risk identified with intermittent use
