Lanthanum carbonate is a chewable phosphate binder that lowers blood phosphate in kidney failure.

Clinical information

Common uses

high blood phosphate in end-stage kidney disease

Common side effects

feeling sick
being sick
stomach pain
constipation
indigestion

Cautions

chew or crush tablets completely
serious gut blockage or perforation has occurred
do not use with bowel obstruction
shows up on abdominal X-rays

Interactions

antacids (take 2 hours apart)
quinolone antibiotics (1 hour before or 4 hours after)
thyroid hormone (take 2 hours apart)
separate timing of other oral medicines

Pregnancy: avoid — use a non-lanthanum phosphate binder
