Lansoprazole

Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces the amount of stomach acid.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • indigestion
  • heartburn, acid reflux and GORD
  • preventing and treating stomach ulcers
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Common side effects

  • headaches
  • feeling or being sick
  • diarrhoea
  • stomach pain
  • wind

Cautions

  • over 3 months' use can lower blood magnesium
  • use over a year raises risk of fractures and B12 deficiency
  • tell your doctor before an endoscopy
  • can hide symptoms of stomach cancer — report new symptoms

Interactions

  • antacids (take 2 hours apart)
  • digoxin (heart medicine)
  • methotrexate
  • warfarin (blood thinner)
  • HIV medicines
  • St John's wort (avoid)

Pregnancy: can be taken, but omeprazole is usually preferred
