Lamotrigine

Lamotrigine is a medicine used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • seizures caused by epilepsy
  • low mood in bipolar disorder

Common side effects

  • headaches
  • a rash
  • feeling or being sick
  • dizziness or drowsiness
  • diarrhoea

Cautions

  • rarely causes serious skin reactions — get help for blisters or peeling
  • do not stop suddenly; dose is reduced gradually
  • may not suit liver, kidney or Brugada heart problems
  • do not drive if dizzy or drowsy

Interactions

  • sodium valproate and carbamazepine (epilepsy medicines)
  • risperidone (mental health medicine)
  • rifampicin (antibiotic)
  • HIV medicines
  • combined pill and hormonal contraceptives
  • alcohol (sleepiness, seizure risk)

Pregnancy: can be used if needed — lowest effective dose
