Lamivudine+Zidovudine

Lamivudine with zidovudine is a combination tablet used with other medicines to treat HIV-1.

Clinical information

Common uses

HIV-1 infection (taken with other antiretrovirals)

Common side effects

headache
feeling sick
tiredness and feeling unwell
diarrhoea
cough

Cautions

can cause anaemia and low white blood cells
long-term use can cause muscle disease (myopathy)
lactic acidosis and severe liver problems reported
hepatitis B can flare after stopping if co-infected

Interactions

ribavirin (worsens anaemia; not advised together)
interferon alfa (liver failure risk in HIV/hepatitis C)
bone marrow suppressing or cytotoxic medicines
sorbitol (lowers lamivudine levels)
medicines antagonistic to zidovudine (avoid)

Pregnancy: registry data show no increased risk of birth defects
