Lamivudine+Zidovudine

Lamivudine with zidovudine is a combination tablet used with other medicines to treat HIV-1.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • HIV-1 infection (taken with other antiretrovirals)

Common side effects

  • headache
  • feeling sick
  • tiredness and feeling unwell
  • diarrhoea
  • cough

Cautions

  • can cause anaemia and low white blood cells
  • long-term use can cause muscle disease (myopathy)
  • lactic acidosis and severe liver problems reported
  • hepatitis B can flare after stopping if co-infected

Interactions

  • ribavirin (worsens anaemia; not advised together)
  • interferon alfa (liver failure risk in HIV/hepatitis C)
  • bone marrow suppressing or cytotoxic medicines
  • sorbitol (lowers lamivudine levels)
  • medicines antagonistic to zidovudine (avoid)

Pregnancy: registry data show no increased risk of birth defects
