Lamivudine

Lamivudine is an antiviral tablet used to treat chronic hepatitis B infection.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • chronic hepatitis B with active liver inflammation

Common side effects

  • ear, nose and throat infections
  • sore throat
  • diarrhoea

Cautions

  • hepatitis B can flare up badly after stopping treatment
  • get tested for HIV first — resistance can develop
  • lactic acidosis and severe liver problems reported
  • virus resistance can develop during treatment

Interactions

  • sorbitol (lowers lamivudine levels; avoid long-term use together)

Pregnancy: registry data show no increased risk of birth defects
