Lamivudine

Lamivudine is an antiviral tablet used to treat chronic hepatitis B infection.

Clinical information

Common uses

chronic hepatitis B with active liver inflammation

Common side effects

ear, nose and throat infections
sore throat
diarrhoea

Cautions

hepatitis B can flare up badly after stopping treatment
get tested for HIV first — resistance can develop
lactic acidosis and severe liver problems reported
virus resistance can develop during treatment

Interactions

sorbitol (lowers lamivudine levels; avoid long-term use together)

Pregnancy: registry data show no increased risk of birth defects
