Clinical information

Common uses

sole anaesthetic for short procedures
inducing anaesthesia before other agents
supplementing low-potency anaesthetics

Common side effects

raised blood pressure and pulse
confusion or vivid reactions on waking
feeling or being sick
double vision or jerky eye movements

Cautions

not if a blood pressure rise would be dangerous
breathing can slow with rapid or high doses
confusion during recovery
bladder problems with chronic use or misuse

Pregnancy: prolonged use in late pregnancy may affect baby's developing brain
