Itraconazole

An antifungal capsule for serious fungal infections and fungal nail infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • blastomycosis and histoplasmosis
  • aspergillosis when amphotericin B fails or is not tolerated
  • fungal nail infections (onychomycosis)

Common side effects

  • feeling or being sick
  • rash
  • swelling (oedema)
  • headache
  • diarrhoea

Cautions

  • not for nail infections if heart failure history
  • many medicines are dangerous taken with it
  • rare serious liver damage — stop if symptoms appear
  • report swelling or breathlessness (heart failure signs)

Interactions

  • contraindicated: quinidine, methadone, cisapride, pimozide, ergot medicines
  • lovastatin and simvastatin (contraindicated)
  • oral midazolam and triazolam (contraindicated)
  • felodipine, nisoldipine and ivabradine (contraindicated)
  • calcium channel blockers (heart failure risk)
  • colchicine (contraindicated with kidney or liver impairment)

Pregnancy: not for nail infections in pregnancy or when planning pregnancy
