Isoprenaline

A heart-stimulating injection (isoproterenol) used in shock and during anaesthesia.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • improving circulation in shock
  • bronchospasm during anaesthesia

Common side effects

  • fast heartbeat
  • palpitations
  • nervousness
  • headache
  • dizziness

Cautions

  • can trigger heart rhythm problems and angina, especially with heart disease

Interactions

  • adrenaline (epinephrine) — must not be given at the same time

Pregnancy: only if prescribed — some risks around labour
