Isoniazid

An antibiotic used to treat and prevent tuberculosis (TB).

Clinical information

Common uses

  • treating active TB, with other TB medicines
  • preventing TB in high-risk people

Common side effects

  • numbness or tingling in hands and feet
  • feeling or being sick
  • raised liver enzymes
  • tiredness or weakness

Cautions

  • can cause severe, sometimes fatal, liver damage
  • monthly check-ups; report dark urine, jaundice or lasting tiredness
  • risk higher with age and daily alcohol
  • severe skin reactions reported

Interactions

  • food reduces absorption — take on an empty stomach
  • tyramine foods (cheese, red wine) and histamine-rich fish (avoid)
  • paracetamol (acetaminophen) — liver toxicity risk
  • carbamazepine, phenytoin, valproate (levels rise)
  • theophylline (levels rise)
  • ketoconazole (made less effective)

Pregnancy: used for active TB when the benefit justifies the risk
