Iron Dextran

An injectable iron for iron deficiency when oral iron cannot be used.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • iron deficiency not treatable with oral iron

Common side effects

  • feeling or being sick
  • chest pain or backache
  • flushing or itching
  • low blood pressure
  • dizziness

Cautions

  • life-threatening allergic reactions, even after a tolerated test dose
  • test dose given before the first treatment
  • delayed fever, joint and muscle aches after large doses
  • can flare joint pain in rheumatoid arthritis

Interactions

  • ACE inhibitor blood pressure medicines (higher reaction risk)
  • can distort iron blood tests and some scans

Pregnancy: used when needed — allergic reactions can affect the baby
