Irbesartan

A blood pressure medicine (angiotensin receptor blocker), also used for diabetic kidney disease.

Clinical information

Common uses

high blood pressure
kidney disease caused by diabetes

Common side effects

headaches
joint or muscle pain
feeling or being sick
feeling weak and tired
dizziness

Cautions

may not suit people with heart or liver problems
not usually after previous angioedema (sudden swelling)
risk of dehydration with vomiting, diarrhoea or fever

Interactions

aliskiren or ACE inhibitors like lisinopril
diuretics such as spironolactone
potassium supplements and potassium salt substitutes
lithium
NSAIDs such as ibuprofen
alcohol (risk of low blood pressure)

Pregnancy: a different medicine is usually recommended in pregnancy
