Imipramine

A tricyclic antidepressant for depression, also used short-term for childhood bedwetting.

Clinical information

Common uses

depression
bedwetting in children aged 6 and over

Common side effects

dry mouth
blurred vision
constipation
drowsiness, dizziness or tiredness
in children: nervousness and sleep problems

Cautions

never take with, or within 14 days of, MAOI antidepressants
not during recovery from a heart attack
confusion more likely in older people

Interactions

MAOI antidepressants (contraindicated — can be fatal)
SSRIs such as fluoxetine (raise imipramine levels)
cimetidine raises levels; barbiturates and phenytoin lower them
decongestants with adrenaline-like drugs (avoid)
anticholinergic medicines (stronger side effects)
alcohol (more drowsiness)

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed — possible risk to the baby
