Ibuprofen

A painkiller (NSAID) that relieves pain, reduces inflammation and lowers fever.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • headaches and migraines
  • joint and muscle pain
  • period pain and toothache
  • reducing a high temperature (fever)

Common side effects

  • indigestion and stomach aches
  • feeling or being sick
  • headaches
  • rash
  • dizziness

Cautions

  • not suitable after stomach ulcers or NSAID allergy
  • caution with asthma, heart, liver or kidney problems
  • use the smallest dose for the shortest time
  • no more than 10 days without a doctor's advice

Interactions

  • anticoagulants such as warfarin
  • steroid medicines
  • antidepressants
  • blood pressure medicines
  • other NSAIDs like aspirin or naproxen (do not combine)
  • alcohol (avoid drinking a lot)

Pregnancy: avoid in pregnancy unless a doctor advises
