Ibandronate Sodium INN

A bisphosphonate tablet to treat and prevent osteoporosis after the menopause.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • treating postmenopausal osteoporosis
  • preventing postmenopausal osteoporosis

Common side effects

  • back pain
  • indigestion
  • diarrhoea
  • headache
  • muscle or limb pain

Cautions

  • can irritate the food pipe — stay upright 60 minutes
  • correct low blood calcium before starting
  • jaw bone damage (osteonecrosis) reported
  • report new thigh or groin pain

Interactions

  • calcium supplements and antacids (wait 60 minutes)
  • aspirin and NSAIDs (more stomach irritation)

Pregnancy: not for women who could become pregnant
