Hydroxychloroquine

A disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) for rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and some skin conditions.

Clinical information

Common uses

rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis
lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus)
skin conditions like sarcoidosis, lichen planus and sunlight-triggered conditions

Common side effects

stomach ache
feeling sick or being sick
diarrhoea
headache
an itchy rash

Cautions

takes several weeks to start working — keep taking it
long-term use can affect eyesight — regular eye checks needed
may not suit people with liver, kidney, heart or eye problems
taking too much is dangerous — get urgent medical help

Interactions

digoxin (heart medicine)
epilepsy medicines
antacids and indigestion medicines — may stop it being absorbed
antibiotics such as azithromycin, clarithromycin, erythromycin
some antidepressants

Pregnancy: can be used during pregnancy if needed
