Hydrochlorothiazide

A water tablet (diuretic) for high blood pressure and fluid retention.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high blood pressure
  • fluid retention (oedema) in heart failure
  • oedema from liver or kidney problems

Common side effects

  • dizziness
  • headache
  • restlessness
  • loss of appetite
  • temporary blurred vision

Cautions

  • use carefully in severe kidney or liver disease
  • can worsen lupus
  • sudden eye pain or vision loss — stop and get help
  • protect skin from sun — small skin cancer risk

Interactions

  • lithium — generally should not be combined
  • other blood pressure medicines (effects add up)

Pregnancy: avoid routine use — only if prescribed
