Hyaluronidase

Injected enzyme that helps fluids and drugs spread under the skin.

Clinical information

Common uses

helping subcutaneous fluid administration (hydration)
increasing spread and absorption of other injected drugs
improving contrast absorption in subcutaneous urography

Common side effects

mild injection-site redness and pain
swelling with subcutaneous fluids

Cautions

can spread localised infection — not used in infected areas
rare allergic and anaphylactic-like reactions
careful fluid-rate control in infants

Interactions

furosemide, benzodiazepines, phenytoin (incompatible)
dopamine and alpha agonists (do not enhance with hyaluronidase)
local anaesthetics (faster onset, more systemic reactions)
salicylates, cortisone, antihistamines (may need larger doses)
