Human Recombinant Granulocyte Colony Stimulating Factor (G-CSF)

Injected growth factor that boosts infection-fighting white cells.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • reducing infection during myelosuppressive chemotherapy
  • speeding white-cell recovery in acute myeloid leukaemia
  • bone marrow transplant support and stem-cell mobilisation
  • severe chronic neutropenia; acute radiation exposure

Common side effects

  • fever
  • pain (bone or general)
  • rash
  • cough and breathlessness
  • nosebleed

Cautions

  • spleen can enlarge and rarely rupture — report left-upper-abdominal pain
  • serious lung reaction (ARDS) possible
  • can trigger sickle cell crisis
  • platelets monitored

Pregnancy: no established link with birth defects in studies
