Human Anti D Immunoglobulin

Anti-D (Rho(D)) immune globulin prevents Rh immunisation in Rh-negative women during and after pregnancy.

Clinical information

Common uses

preventing Rh sensitisation in pregnancy and after delivery of an Rh-positive baby
after pregnancy loss, ectopic pregnancy or invasive procedures
after Rh-incompatible blood transfusion

Common side effects

injection-site swelling, redness and mild pain
skin rash
body aches
slight fever

Cautions

not for Rh-positive individuals
severe allergic reactions possible — given where emergency treatment is available
made from human blood — very small risk of transmitting infections
given to the mother, never injected into the newborn

Interactions

live vaccines (measles, mumps, varicella) may work less well — usually delayed 12 weeks

Pregnancy: used in pregnancy; evidence suggests no harm to the baby
