Human Albumin

A protein infusion made from human blood, used to restore blood volume and albumin.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • low blood volume (hypovolaemia)
  • low blood albumin
  • cardiopulmonary bypass procedures
  • plasma exchange

Common side effects

  • anaphylactoid-type allergic reactions

Cautions

  • not for severe anaemia or heart failure with normal blood volume
  • fluid overload possible — dose and rate must match your condition
  • made from human blood — extremely remote risk of infection

Interactions

  • must not be mixed with other medicines
