Homatropine

Eye drops that dilate the pupil and relax eye focusing.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • dilating the pupil for eye examination (cycloplegic refraction)
  • inflammation of the uveal tract
  • before and after some eye operations

Common side effects

  • temporary stinging and burning
  • thirst or dry mouth
  • light sensitivity
  • local irritation with prolonged use

Cautions

  • not with primary or narrow-angle glaucoma
  • extreme caution in infants and small children
  • increased susceptibility in Down's syndrome and the elderly
  • overuse can cause systemic poisoning symptoms
