Homatropine

Eye drops that dilate the pupil and relax eye focusing.

Clinical information

Common uses

dilating the pupil for eye examination (cycloplegic refraction)
inflammation of the uveal tract
before and after some eye operations

Common side effects

temporary stinging and burning
thirst or dry mouth
light sensitivity
local irritation with prolonged use

Cautions

not with primary or narrow-angle glaucoma
extreme caution in infants and small children
increased susceptibility in Down's syndrome and the elderly
overuse can cause systemic poisoning symptoms

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed
