Haloperidol

An antipsychotic tablet used for psychotic disorders and the tics of Tourette's disorder.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • psychotic disorders
  • tics and vocal utterances of Tourette's disorder
  • severe behaviour problems in children, after other treatments fail

Common side effects

  • movement problems — shaking, stiffness, restlessness
  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth
  • blurred vision
  • constipation

Cautions

  • can cause tardive dyskinesia — involuntary movements that may become permanent
  • neuroleptic malignant syndrome (fever, rigidity) — needs urgent help
  • heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation) reported, especially at high doses
  • not for people with Parkinson's disease
