Goserelin

A hormone-suppressing implant used for prostate cancer, breast cancer and endometriosis.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • prostate cancer
  • advanced breast cancer in pre- and perimenopausal women
  • endometriosis
  • thinning the womb lining before endometrial ablation

Common side effects

  • hot flushes
  • sweating
  • headache
  • reduced sex drive or sexual problems
  • mood changes or depression

Cautions

  • tumour symptoms can briefly worsen when starting (tumour flare)
  • can raise blood sugar and diabetes risk in men
  • increased heart attack and stroke risk reported in men
  • severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome) can occur

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm an unborn baby
