A sterile drip solution of glucose (dextrose) and salt given into a vein to replace fluid, sodium and some calories.

Clinical information

Common uses

fluid replacement
supplying sodium chloride and minimal carbohydrate calories

Common side effects

fever reactions
infection, vein irritation or clot at the drip site
fluid overload

Cautions

used with great care in heart failure, kidney failure and fluid-retention states
too much can cause fluid overload or dilute blood salts
blood sugar swings in newborns need careful dosing
