Glipizide

A sulfonylurea tablet that lowers blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise

Common side effects

  • dizziness
  • diarrhoea
  • nervousness
  • tremor
  • low blood sugar

Cautions

  • can cause severe low blood sugar, especially in elderly or kidney problems
  • not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
  • avoid if allergic to sulfonamide (sulfa) medicines
  • can cause anaemia in people with G6PD deficiency

Interactions

  • miconazole (oral antifungal) — severe low blood sugar
  • fluconazole (antifungal) — raises glipizide levels
  • colesevelam — take glipizide at least 4 hours before it
  • other diabetes medicines — higher risk of low blood sugar

Pregnancy: only if prescribed — stopped at least 2 weeks before delivery
