Gliclazide

A tablet that lowers blood sugar in type 2 diabetes by increasing insulin release.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • type 2 diabetes

Common side effects

  • stomach pain
  • diarrhoea
  • low blood sugar (hypos) — dizziness, nausea, hunger, tiredness

Cautions

  • can cause low blood sugar — keep something sugary handy
  • not suitable in severe kidney or liver disease, or acute porphyria
  • do not skip or delay meals
  • best to avoid alcohol — it affects blood sugar

Interactions

  • insulin and other diabetes medicines
  • weight loss medicines such as semaglutide or tirzepatide
  • some antibiotics, such as clarithromycin
  • some blood pressure or heart failure medicines

Pregnancy: not usually used — a different medicine is offered
