Glibenclamide

Sulfonylurea tablet that lowers blood sugar in type 2 diabetes.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise

Common side effects

  • low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia)
  • nausea, fullness, heartburn
  • allergic skin rashes and itching

Cautions

  • possible increased cardiovascular mortality with oral hypoglycaemics
  • not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
  • rare liver injury — stop if jaundice occurs

Interactions

  • bosentan (contraindicated)
  • NSAIDs, salicylates, sulfonamides, MAOIs, beta-blockers (more hypoglycaemia)
  • warfarin-type anticoagulants (more hypoglycaemia)
  • thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, oestrogens, phenytoin (raise blood sugar)
  • ciprofloxacin (possible interaction)

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed — insulin usually preferred
