Gentamicin

An aminoglycoside antibiotic injection for serious bacterial infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • serious infections from susceptible bacteria such as Pseudomonas and E. coli
  • bacterial sepsis, including in newborns
  • serious infections of the urinary tract, lungs, bones, skin and CNS

Cautions

  • can damage the kidneys — kidney function monitored closely
  • can cause permanent hearing and balance damage
  • blood level monitoring needed to avoid toxic levels
  • contains sodium metabisulfite — allergy risk, especially in asthma

Interactions

  • other kidney- or ear-toxic drugs, e.g. vancomycin, amikacin, cisplatin (avoid)
  • potent diuretics such as furosemide or ethacrynic acid (avoid)

Pregnancy: avoid — aminoglycosides can harm the unborn baby's hearing
